Debby and I watched today as an eagle passed by our office rather fast going towards Grand Marais.  Not more than 5 minutes later Debby saw it fly by and land in a tree outside our office.  It was so close!  We went out to take some pictures – it is a little blurry but you get the point!  – Kris

Last Hurrah October 20, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — cascadevacationrentals @ 9:51 am

This weekend is the last hurrah for the season for Opels cabins.  Most of our other 3 season cabins have closed for the winter.  There are still many other homes to choose from for the rest of fall and winter.  It is also the last hurrah for some of the shops and restaurants in Grand Marais.  Be sure to check out our website for this weekends availability.

Eagle’s Nest Tragedy October 15, 2009

Debby and I have both decided that the eagle’s nest by County Road 7 and Highway 61 is gone!  We both noticed after the big wind/hurricane we had two weeks ago that it wasn’t there.  The trees in that area look like they just snapped in half.  I am in the habit of always looking for the nest on my way to and from Grand Marais.  I hope they rebuild so we can see them again!  I can’t imagine how much work it is to rebuild a nest of that size.  I coincidently have seen eagles in that area twice this week.  -Kris

Wow Was It Windy! September 30, 2009

Monday and Tuesday winds swept our area like I have never felt before.  On two separate occasions I was almost knocked down.  I am not a small person either – I am 6 feet tall!  Lake Superior at the Grand Marais harbor was intense.  Trees were knocked down all over the county onto roads, driveways, power lines and homes.  At this time there are still people without power, including Debby at our office.  I thought I would include a picture of the tree that is down at the Lutsen park.  Amazing how something so big can be unearthed in no time! -Kris

Bumps in the Night September 28, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — cascadevacationrentals @ 11:19 am

Last night I was sitting on my couch watching tv at around 9:30pm and I could hear something outside our living room windows, which go floor to ceiling.  I thought, who is out there trying to mess with my head?  I watched the windows and could see something moving about and all the sudden a bear nose was bumping against my windows.  Instant panic set in, what was this bear going to do?  I am sure it was just looking for a snack to get ready for the big winter – but I was not a fan!  I quickly ran to our sliding glass door and banged as loud as I could so it would go away.  Unfortunately our backyard light doesn’t work so I couldn’t get a better look at it.  It definitely got my attention.  I will now be on bear alert all the time until winter comes.  I love having wildlife in our yard, but bears are not one of the ones I like.  I know people say most are harmless, but you just never know.  I will keep my camera handy in case my not so little friend comes back! – Kris
