A visit to Fort William July 29, 2009
Fort William is just a short trip over the border to the north of Grand Marais. Fort William is a large living history museum that recreates the days of the North West Company in the middle of the fur trading days. There are over 40 buildings within the fort. Several actors in period costumes guide you through a story as you make your way around the fort.
I traveled to Fort William in June with my mother, good friend, and five kids. The kids loved the fort and especially loved the baby sheep on the farm. I try to make a trip up there at least once a year with the kids.

Let’s Hold out Hope for August July 15, 2009
I really like the sun and the heat. This summer so far has not provided me either. It is July 15th and I am sitting here in pants, a t-shirt, a long sleeve shirt and I am comfortable. I would rather be in shorts. I even turned my heat on in my car on the drive home since I had worn sandals and my feet were freezing. Debby and I did comment on a person who came into our office in what looked like ski pants…for that person and all the other cold people on the North Shore, visitors or not, we will hold out hope for a warm August.

Llama on the Loose July 8, 2009
It is very common to see wildlife on the North Shore. Just last week I saw a fox almost eat my husbands golf ball at Superior National, then later that week I saw a large bear cross the road. You would expect me to say I saw a moose or a wolf, but never a llama. I was bringing my son to daycare last Thursday on County Road 7 and saw something large, furry and white up ahead. I slowed down to a stop and stared at a llama on the side of the road. It was so bizarre. I didn’t know what to do, so I pulled out my camera phone and took a picture, then went on my way and called the police station to alert them of the oddity. I must apologize to the dispatcher as I could not stop laughing. I was caught so off guard, especially when she asked me to describe the llama…tall, furry, white with a brown spot. I hope that the owner now has their llama safe at home and all is well. As for me, I now look for all types of wildlife on my drive to work, including llamas. -Kris
