What a Morning! February 25, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — cascadevacationrentals @ 11:16 am

On my way in to work this morning I saw 3 eagles!  I was so pleased and thought about how I should tell our readers where the eagle’s nest is on Highway 61.  Then my morning got even better as a very healthy wolf crossed in front of my car.  Of course too fast and I could not get the camera out.  Its coat was so fluffy and lush.  I have only seen one wolf while living up here and it did not look so great.  The wolves have had a rough go of it the last couple years as we have not had enough snow to catch their prey.  To top off my exciting wildlife sightings, yesterday I saw a fox running rapidly away from the road and last week I saw 2 eagles fighting above Cutface Creek.

Daily I look on my drive to and from work to see if there is an eagle in the nest along Highway 61.  In the spring you can usually see the mother eagle sitting on her egg and the father eagle perched in the next tree over.  The nest is located about .25 miles past County Road 7 toward Grand Marais- I always look to the lake right after the No Passing sign.  Be sure to check it out the next time you are up here! -Kris

Snowshoeing Adventure #2 February 17, 2009

I thought I would share another great snowshoe adventure with all of our readers.  The Superior Hiking Trails are great to follow on snowshoes.  This weekend we took the trail to Lake Agnes and then to White Sky Rock.  We couldn’t have asked for a better day!  The trail to Lake Agnes was easy to follow.  We took it from the Caribou Boat Landing (there is another access point near Cathedral of the Pines Camp).  I would recommend having snowshoes with cramp-ons(metal spikes on the bottom).  There is quite a tricky assent at one point which would not have worked well without friends to help you up and cramp-ons to help you dig in.  The lake was very quiet and was a bit slushy under the snow.  The trail up to white sky was packed down and was challenging, but worth it for the view.  Check out these trails the next time you are in the area-winter or summer for that matter!-Kris

Snowshoe Adventure February 12, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — cascadevacationrentals @ 12:14 pm

Snowshoeing is a great and easy way to get out and enjoy the woods of the North Shore.  We recently went up to Caribou Lake and had a great time.  It is a wonderful way to see different areas that you may not get to see in the summer time.  Be careful on any lakes or rivers – make sure the ice is thick enough to support your weight and let someone know where you are going.  If you did not bring snowshoes, you can rent them from the following places:
Joynes Ben Franklin-Grand Marais
Lake Superior Trading Post-Grand Marais
Bear Track Outfitters-Grand Marais
Superior Coastal Sports-Grand Marais
Tuscarora Lodge-Gunflint Trail
Gunflint Lodge-Gunflint Trail
Sawtooth Outfitters-Tofte

Here are some photos from our recent adventure-Kris

Stunning Sunsets February 4, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — cascadevacationrentals @ 11:05 am

I think this winter there have been a record number of stunning sunsets.  It seems whenever there is a bright sunny winter day, you know you will have something to look forward to on your drive home from work.  The sky is filled with pinks, purples and oranges and every time it is even more beautiful.  I will try to remember to stick my camera in my car, so next time it happens I can share it with people who might not get to experience the beauty.-Kris
