Small Town Traditions November 26, 2008

I haven’t lived on the North Shore very long, but it is very easy to get into the small town traditions.  One of my favorites happened last night - the annual Christmas parade.

It’s not a big parade by any means.  I would say this year there were only 8 floats, but it is so fun to see all the people that come out to watch.  My family participated in the Arrowhead Electric float that included a large truck and a very large Christmas tree with lights.  Steve’s son Tristan participated in the preschool float.  Since Grand Marais doesn’t have a very long main street and there are not a lot of floats - sometimes we go around the block twice to make it worth everyone’s while.  My husband and I commented that people who were dining from out of the local area may have thought we were crazy, but to us it is a lot of fun. – Kris

What do you do on a rainy day on the North Shore?  My family and I drove up to the Grand Portage.  We had planned to check out the new monument but it was closed.  There were large waves breaking on the shore which made for a very scenic drive.  I had not been past Grand Portage since I was very little, so we drove to the Mount Josephine pull off.  Although it was dreary, it was still a beautiful sight.  We even got the chance to see an ore boat very close to the shore.  It is definately a place I would love to go back to – maybe in the summer and on a sunnier day.-Kris
