Hike to the top of “Dragon Mountain” September 25, 2008

Filed under: Stories and Pictures — cascadevacationrentals @ 1:34 pm

This past weekend Kate and I and the kids took a hike to the top of Cascade Bluff.  This is the mountain you can see from our front yard.  There is no set trail to the top so it was a bit of an experience to hike through the dense forest up a mountain with a 6, 3, and 1 year old.  I ended up carrying Lexi on my back and Tristan on my front and Will walked the whole way up.  On the less steep parts Tristan was able to walk with Kate and remarked that, “Mama was opening ”leaf doors” for him”, by moving aside the seedlings that were right at face height for him.  Once at the top Tristan (3) was able to pick out our house across the forest and field.   We often tell he and Will that dragons live under the mountain.  He was very concerned that we might wake the dragon my walking on the mountain.

Thanks,

Steve

Fun Things to Do for Fall! September 24, 2008

Fall at Temperance River

Fall at Temperance River

Fall is here and the leaves have started to change.  What a fun time of year.  Here are a few things you can do to enjoy the fall colors:

Drive the Fall Color Tour – You can either start at the Caribou Trail in Lutsen or the Sawbill Trail in Tofte.  While you are on your tour, get some fresh maple syrup from Caribou Cream or Wild Country Maples.  Once you go with Lutsen homemade syrup, you will never buy it from a store again.

Go to Lutsen Mountains and take a gondola up to the observation deck or for the adventurous souls, get the a glimpse of the scenery by going down the alpine slide.

Hike Mount Oberg.  It is one of my personal favorite hikes.  The views of the leaves and Lake Superior are truly breathtaking.  I always hope to see a moose in the large pond on the back side of the mountain.

Take a plane ride with Dan.  Dan Anderson offers scenic tours of the area.  You can either pick a moose ride where you look for a moose, or you can tell him how long you want to be in the air and let him pick the
flight route.  It is something you will never forget and one of the best ways to see the fall colors.  You can reach Dan at 218-387-1687.

We all know that after Labor Day anything goes for weather on the North Shore.  This year we had such a warm and sunny Labor Day weekend we might have all been in denial that fall is just around the corner.  Sure enough, the week after the temperature dropped and we are officially in fall mode.  Sweaters instead of t-shirts, leaves starting to change on stressed trees, and soups are being made instead of cold pasta salads.  We will gear up for our fall renters who mostly come up to see the pretty fall colors.  I know it is one of my favorite times of the year.  I will say goodbye to summer and welcome fall with the hopes of a couple more warm weather days. -Kris
